Factotum Brewhouse & The Monkey Barrel Collaborate on Curious Jorge, their Second Collaboration Beer to Benefit Chaffee Park
The two neighborhood businesses seek to raise money for playground improvements with the second in the “Sunnyside Series” of beers
DENVER, CO (December 29, 2017) – Factotum Brewhouse and The Monkey Barrel, two drinking establishments from Denver’s Sunnyside neighborhood, are giving back to their community with Curious Jorge, a collaborative brew intended to help raise money for playground improvements at Chaffee Park, located at the center of the neighborhood and across the street from The Monkey Barrel. A portion of the profits of every Curious Jorge sold will be donated to the cause.
“There a lot of families in Sunnyside and, as father of four, I see the need to make the park more family-friendly by upgrading playground equipment,” says Jimmy Nigg, owner of The Monkey Barrel. “The Monkey Barrel is committed to giving back to the community and supporting our neighbors in Sunnyside through various fundraisers. We love hosting parties and having fun, so the opportunity to sell beer and raise money for Chaffee Park seemed like a great way to get the community involved all summer long.” Laura Bruns, co-owner at Factotum, says, “We are invested in our neighborhood and community and love being a part of North Denver. We’re excited to collaborate with fellow neighbor, The Monkey Barrel, on this project.” Nigg is working with Sunnyside United Neighbors, Inc. and Denver Parks & Recreation in regards to how the money raised by Curious Jorge can be used to the greatest effect.
Curious Jorge is an amber ale hopped with Australian and New Zealand hops, an “Antipodean Amber” as Factotum head brewer and co-owner Chris Bruns has dubbed it. “It’s a beer that’s dark but not too dark, hoppy but not too hoppy, it’s approachable to casual drinkers but will keep the beer geek’s interest piqued, too. We chose hops from the Southern Hemisphere because it’s currently summer down there and we want to remind drinkers of warmer weather when public parks get much more use” adds Bruns. The beer is hopped with Green Bullet, Pride of Ringwood, Nelson Sauvin, Ella, Pacific Jade, and Galaxy. It clocks in at 5.8% ABV and 36 IBU. The name of the beer is a reference to a simian of children’s literature fame which, in turn, is a nod to The Monkey Barrel. The name was then given a Spanish twist as an homage to the neighborhood’s Hispanic roots.
This neighborhood improvement effort doesn’t necessarily end with playground upgrades; there’s potential for even more Factotum/Monkey Barrel collaborations in the future. Curious Jorge is the second in what the two businesses call the Sunnyside Series—a line of philanthropic beers brewed to benefit different neighborhood projects. “In the long term, I’d like to see a jogging trail going all the way around the park and to make the park more bike-friendly,” says Nigg. “There will be an ongoing discussion with my neighbors about needs for the park, so I welcome all ideas and opinions.” The previous installation in the Sunnyside Series was a Hefeweizen called Monkey Bars.
Curious Jorge can be found at both Factotum Brewhouse and The Monkey Barrel starting December 29. It may also be found at other local establishments in the near future.
